Teachers largely appreciate the fact that a little bit of competition is a great motivator for students. The idea behind Fractics was to create a good card game rather than just use the excitement generated by the word 'game' to cover up a poor fractions game. The game I have developed successfully involves tactics which allow players to disrupt each other's progress. The result is that players become involved in trying to improve their skills with fractions because they are enjoying the gameplay and trying to win. Simply put, Fractics is a card game where players try to make target fractions whilst also attempting to lay cards that will not help their opponent. The more you play, the more you develop tactics and the deeper your understanding of fractions becomes. The notion of equivalence means factors and multiples are dealt with all the time. At a higher level the game encompasses adding and subtracting fractions. |
