Dear Just Wondering,

Fair question. It's not because the Times is the "paper of record," or anything like that.

And it's not because the Times has the best coverage; far from it. In fact, we've noticed -- repeatedly -- that the Boston Globe (owned by the Times) invariably has more timely and more thorough coverage of actual news stories than its parent paper.

No, ultimately, the reason is this: The New York Times has the two best and two worst columnists in American journalism. That makes it irresistible.
